Get to Know IIBEC Speakers Patrick Reicher and Scott D. Wood

PER

Patrick E. Reicher

February 15, 2024

Leading up to its convention, IIBEC is featuring speakers so you can get to know them ahead of time. Don’t miss their presentations!

Patrick E. Reicher, REWC, REWO, CCS, CCCA, SE, of Raths, Raths & Johnson Inc. in Willowbrook, Illinois

Saturday, March 9
11:00 a.m. – Noon
“Reviving the Concrete Giants: The Role of Structures as Building Enclosures”

  1. Why should people attend your session?
Many practicing building enclosure consultants pursued education and obtained licensure as professional engineers and/or structural engineers. To investigate and design repairs for exposed concrete structures, expertise with both concrete and building enclosures are required. As building enclosure consultants, we periodically forget our engineering roots, and this presentation will revisit how enclosures and structures are often one and the same.
  2. What are you most looking forward to at this year’s convention?
The IIBEC convention was last held in Phoenix during the fall of 2021, during which the COVID-19 pandemic kept attendance relatively low in comparison to previous years. The 2024 IIBEC convention in Phoenix will feature a full slate of attendees, presentations and networking events...all of which will result in a hallmark event for the building enclosure industry.
  3. Where is the coolest place you’ve traveled?
One of my first assignments as an engineer-in-training was to investigate reports of spalled concrete at Wrigley Field. I worked around the clock sounding concrete, preparing crack maps and documenting existing conditions. I spent many evenings sleeping in the Wrigley Field skyboxes (and once in the scoreboard enclosure) awaiting directives regarding the next day of investigative activities. As one of the first people in the ballpark each day, I would patiently wait in the left field bleachers, collecting batting practice home run balls until paid attendees were let into the ballpark to eliminate my monopoly on batting practice souvenirs.
  4. What was your favorite game as a child?
I was an avid baseball player as a child and remain a loyal Chicago Cubs fan to this day.

Scott D. Wood of VaproShield in Gig Harbor, Washington

Monday, March 11
2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.
“Mass Timber Moisture Protection”

  1. Why should people attend your session?
Mass timber construction has been around since 2000 B.C. With recent manufacturing advances utilizing laminated layer of wood, it is now a multi-billion-dollar market. Learn what the laminated material is, how it’s used in construction and its benefits for faster, more efficient construction and reduced environmental impact; most notably, how we protect mass timber materials from manufacturing to occupancy from damage due to water.
  2. What are you most looking forward to at this year’s convention?
Discussions with colleagues in all aspects of building and construction, though especially the fundamentals of building sciences.
  3. Where is the coolest place you’ve traveled?
Rome. Seeing objects and buildings still standing that are thousands of years old.
  4. What is your go-to karaoke song?
    “Some Enchanted Evening”
