Sharing a name with the iconic boxer, Mohammad Ali brings a similar drive to his work—both in the ring and on renovation sites. Born in Syria, Mohammad was just 12 when he began learning construction from his father. By 17, he had relocated to Canada, starting a new life in Sault Ste. Marie with nothing but his hands, hope, and a head full of ambition. Today, Mohammad Ali runs MSH Drywall and Painting.
Juggling high school with labor jobs, Mohammad taught himself English and began working for local clients—many of them teachers, classmates, and their families. He printed his first business cards as a teenager and let his work speak for itself. His reputation spread quickly through word-of-mouth, laying the foundation for what would become MSH Drywall and Painting.
Education Meets Experience
Though hands-on learning fueled his trade, Mohammad also pursued higher education, earning a Bachelor's degree in English and Visual Art. “Education is invaluable,” he says, “but equally important is building something of your own.” With 13 years of field experience, he balances the practical with the academic—merging visual creativity with technical skill.
Mohammad offers a comprehensive range of services, including framing, drywall, mudding, plastering, interior and exterior painting, spray painting, backsplashes, wallpapering, flooring installation, and even popcorn ceiling removal. Whether it's a residential repaint or a commercial overhaul, Mohammad leads with versatility and precision.
Known for his honesty and transparency, Mohammad educates clients on cost-effective alternatives to high-end materials—helping them achieve the same results on a budget. His emphasis on surface preparation and long-term durability sets his work apart. “The prep is just as important as the paint,” he says.
When asked about pricing, Mohammad insists on in-person assessments. Every space is different, and he believes quotes should reflect the condition, complexity, and specific needs of each project. It’s part of his commitment to fairness and accuracy.
Giving Back to the Community That Welcomed Him
Transitioning to life in Canada wasn’t easy, but the support Mohammad received inspired him to give back. He began volunteering at the Sault Community Career Centre, helping new immigrants acclimate and offering translation support. “Helping someone understand a language is helping them find their voice in a new world,” he explains.
Eight years after arriving in Sault Ste. Marie, Mohammad has built more than just walls—he’s built a legacy. His business now reaches clients through a Google profile, website, and social media, and his team continues to grow. Whether the job is big or small, his craftsmanship remains constant.
“I don’t just renovate,” Mohammad says. “I create.” Influenced by his background in visual arts, he approaches every project with an artistic eye. The results are polished, thoughtful, and deeply personal—proof that great construction can be as expressive as it is functional.
