New Vapor-Variable Interior Membrane Provides Optimal Moisture Control in Cold Climates

Benjamin Obdyke, a leading supplier of high-performance building envelope products, has launched VaporWise, a vapor-variable interior membrane that provides advanced moisture management. Innovative by design, with a perm rating ranging from 0.14 to 14, VaporWise adapts to seasonal changes: During winter, VaporWise acts as a Class II vapor retarder, helping to prevent interior moisture from entering the wall cavity; in the summer, the membrane’s permeability increases, allowing moisture to escape and ensuring a dry, healthy wall cavity year-round.

“Just like on the home exterior, excess moisture in the home can create problems within the building envelope. A family of four can produce 2+ gallons of water vapor per day just by cooking, showering, breathing, and doing laundry. If that water vapor doesn’t have a path to dry out — or worse, if it gets trapped inside the walls — it can cause mold, rot, and expensive repairs,” said Tara Murray, Director of Marketing for Benjamin Obdyke. “VaporWise helps alleviate these concerns, helping to keep the wall cavity dry by providing ideal permeability based on the specific needs in each season.”

VaporWise is made with tri-laminate construction — a reinforced mesh for strength and resilience, plus a translucent outer layer that provides visibility for installation and monitoring. The membrane is perfectly suited for use with blown-in cavity insulation; its structure ensures effective insulation coverage and maintains the integrity of the insulation system.

The membrane also can be detailed to serve as an air-control layer to help improve energy efficiency and indoor comfort.

VaporWise comes in 164-foot rolls with 806 square feet of gross coverage per roll. It carries a Class A fire rating.
