Ware Malcomb announced construction is underway on Shavers Center lodge building in Snowshoe, W. Va. Its Houston office is providing architectural services for the two-story, 18,000 square foot day-time ski lodge project.
Snowshoe Mountain is a year-round destination covering a total area of 11,000 acres in the Appalachian Mountain Range and includes the second highest point in the state at 4,848’ elevation. The new Shavers Center replaces the former Shavers Center, which had been the mountain’s central lodge for nearly 50 years.
According to Chris Royster, Regional Director, Ware Malcomb, the design for the new day lodge overcame several challenges, including a significant grade change on the site, lengthy access to the resort, and providing a mix of employee and guest functions in the same building. “Our goal was to provide a unique design that maintains a connection with nature, create a hub of efficiency for both the employees and guests, and provide the resort a memorable destination that will keep people coming back for years to come.”
The project design reimagines the guest experience by consolidating critical skier services into a single, thoughtfully designed hub. The program integrates Ski & Ride School, Group Services, and Outdoor Adventure operations into a cohesive facility that prioritizes flow, efficiency, and user comfort. The layout promotes intuitive circulation for high-traffic days, while upgraded locker rooms, staff facilities, and guest service zones reflect a modern alpine hospitality approach.
Equally important to the lodge’s success is the 3,300 square foot outdoor program, designed to create a dynamic, multi-season gathering space at the mountain’s edge. Ware Malcomb introduced an expansive terrace featuring tiered seating, integrated fire features, and unobstructed sightlines to the slopes—intended as both an après-ski destination and a passive-use respite zone.
The design/build contractor for the project is Veritas Construction Group, LLC.
